SEO Tips
In order for your site to do well in the search engines like Google, you have to have a fairly good understanding of SEO. This page will give you some professional SEO tips, to help you get on the first page of Google.
I don’t expect to maintain first page rankings on Google for this particular phrase, as it has heaps of competition, but then at least half of the practices that many SEO experts were using for years are now being punished by Google.
The process involves doing keyword research, buying the right domain, building your site correctly, on page optimization and finally off page optimization, or back links.
In this article, I will just be talking about how to get your title, description and keywords right for each page on your site, and how to make back links to all of them.
On Page SEO Tips
OK, so if you were following what I’ve been talking about on the previous page on building a website, you might have already done your keyword research.
Paid for a domain name and hosting through Host Gator, (or some other hosting company), and taken advantage of their support crew to help with any questions you have on setting up a WordPress website.
It’s all fairly simple, I use Fanastico Deluxe as my FTP client, and it’s on the Host Gator control panel, or whatever host you decide to use. You just fill out the form, and then you have your WordPress admin panel.
There are many different WordPress plugins that help with SEO, and my favorite is the All In One SEO pack.
This one allows you to put a description and keyword tags on each post and page, among other things. In the settings for that one, you will see a page that lets you change the way your default titles come out.
Fill out your home page title, keywords and description, and change the post title format to %post_title%, the page title to %page_title%, and the category title to %category_title%.
This will mean that you don’t have the site title appearing in the title of those posts and pages.
This is on page SEO, because it’s starting with the title of your pages, which is the most important thing, also I like the Google XML Sitemaps plugin, and a few other ones like Post Layout, and the one that lets you exclude pages from navigation.
So, you choose a good title for each page, which doesn’t have too much competition, and is related somewhat to the keywords in your domain name, and then you put in your content.
You need to check the Google keyword tool for the exact match search volume of a phrase, you want something that has over a thousand at least. Then, you want to check the page rank of the results that come up for that phrase on Google.
You should have the keywords in your title as about 3% of the text, and definitely no more than 5%, a photo or two, perhaps a video, and subtitles in bold to break the page into sections.
Some people say you should also make bold the keyword phrase in your title once somewhere on the page, for example professional SEO tips.
Off Page SEO Tips
It depends on how hard it is to compete for a keyword as to how many back links you should try to make to your site. I would suggest doing a few things a day, on an ongoing basis.
To start with, you will want to get your site indexed by Google, and to do that, I make social bookmarking back links from sites like Digg, Delicious, Bebo, Google Buzz, and Linked In, using a Firefox browser add-on called Add This, although I wouldn’t go overboard on the social bookmarking, as it’s not advisable to spam.
I might do a few other things like that, and I especially like sharing to the social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and if I have the time I make a You Tube video, but the really good links come from pages with lots of words on them, especially if they have links leading to them as well, or have high PR already.
My favorite article writing sites are HubPages, Squidoo, Ezine, Knoji, Go Articles, Gather, Yahoo Voices, Info Barrel, and Triond, although there are hundreds of different ones that will suffice to make back links from.
Make at least a few social media or social bookmarking back links to these articles once you’ve written them, and as time goes on, remember to keep making back links to them from other articles if you can.
Try signing up to forums that are relevant, which allow you to post do follow links in your signature.
Follow the rules, and don’t spam, but stay relevant to the discussion in your posts, and learn.
Google likes to see pages that have a growing number of back links to them over time, and that are updated every now and then.
The page rank of the back links to your site rubs off on you, and a link to one part of your site extends to the rest of it, as long as it’s all linked together, and there are so many algorithms, that I can’t explain much more than that.
You have to get as many relevant, quality sites as you can linking to you from relevant link text, and try to mix up the link text a little, to include related searches you want to compete for, and random anchor texts like website to make it look natural.
If you find this all too hard, you can get me to do some fairly cheap back linking for you by paying me to write you an article or two, my email is in the sidebar if you want to give that a try.
What it may require is that you build a second or third big website aimed at a different search, and use that to link back to the first one, or if your first one fails to rank, you might use that one to link to your next one, to get a high PR link from your own site. Lots of work to be done there.
