Is it really possible to make a decent living from Google Adsense clicks on your blog? Well, maybe I’m not the right person to ask, because I’ve been working online for five years now, published thousands of articles here and there, and I’m still only making a few dollars a day.
I make most of my money from selling my services, and I don’t really concentrate on it, but it is nice to get a hundred and fifty every few months, and I’m sure it will pick up in the future.
I’m not saying it’s not possible to make good money through Google Adsense, I’ve heard of people doing it, but it takes a combination of luck, intense hard work, and a fantastic talent at SEO.
I will try to explain how I think you would go about building your way up to a good income through Google Adsense, for those who have a serious will to try and do it.
First of all, let’s look at why I’m not making much money. I write about internet marketing and social media marketing, niches saturated with content that I have to compete with on Google, and it doesn’t pay a lot per click, only about a dollar.
The title of this article has been written literally hundreds of thousands of times before by bloggers and article writers, because when they get stuck for an idea of something to write about, they write about that obvious thing, like I’m doing now.
To have a chance of making good money, you have to find something to write about that barely anyone has ever written about before, so that you can easily appear first on the first page of the Google search.
Doing Keyword Research
To work out whether there’s much competition, try typing in the keyword into Google, and have a look at how many results there are. Then, type it in in quotation marks. That will tell you how many pages mention that exact phrase.
You will also want to make sure that the phrase has a decent exact match monthly worldwide search volume.
You do this by looking on the Google keyword tool. You want to be sure to uncheck the broad match box, and check the exact match box, because that’s the results that really matter.
Look for a phrase that seems like it would have low competition, but that also has a few thousand exact match searches a month.
You want to choose a phrase that is someone looking to buy something, or looking for an answer to their question that a click on an ad might solve.
The goal is to choose a topic where the ads that automatically show up are an exact match to what the search query is.
For example, I’ve seen some great pages where I’ve searched for a free file converting software for flv to mp4, and I end up on a page which is mostly ads, for paid versions of that software.
Those pages probably make a fortune in Adsense clicks because people are searching for something, they end up on a page that gives them exactly what they were looking for, the only problem with that example, is most of the people will bounce off and continue looking for the free software.
There are millions of people making these pages to answer people’s questions, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be a part of it.
A New Opportunity Opens Up
After the recent algorithm updates on Google, a lot of the pages that couldn’t be beaten in the past got punished badly because they have thousands of spam links pointed towards them.
In the past, this was the only way to get to the top of a search with lots of competition, and now it lands you on the hundredth page, and most of those sites will never recover from this slap.
This presents a huge opportunity for a new generation of internet marketers to take over those searches, so long as they know how to build quality links that really work.
You still do need some back links to a site to get it to rank, but it’s got more to do with the on-page content and how often you update the site with fresh content.
It’s best to make one blog, maybe two, and have it focused around one subject that you truly have an interest in, because you will need to write about it every day, or at least every other day.
You need a steady flow of high quality, long, original entertaining or compelling, engaging content that people will spend time reading and that they will want to share with their friends on social media.
Links from social media will play a hugely important role in rankings in the future. This is how people will get link weight these days. Google recognises that people very rarely link naturally from their blogs to another person’s site.
They recognise when people are building links for a link’s sake, and so have punished almost all of the link building practices which used to work.
For example, you don’t want to constantly build links from auto-approve article directories, directory sites, social bookmarking sites, blog comments, forum signatures, profiles, etc.
What Does Work In SEO Link Building?
That’s what they call spam, or links from link farms or content farms. There’s very little that does work, but you still get some benefit from writing a long high quality original article on Ezine, HubPages, Squidoo, Yahoo Contributor Network, eHow, Guardian, Examiner, Knoji, prlog.org, Blogger, Typepad, Wordpess.com, (especially on your own domain name) and maybe Triond.
Some of these sites may possibly work in reverse if you build links from them, it’s not entirely clear how the algorithms work when you build dozens and dozens of links in a link pyramid, but if you do it gradually over time from sites that have authority, and also link out to authority sites as sources in your articles (like Wikipedia, CNN), then that should be enough to rank you very well.
The only problem is, to justify doing all of that work, you have to choose a particular phrase that has tens of thousands of exact match searches a month for the home page, and those phrase always have big competition.
If you enjoy blogging, you may gradually build up your income by writing eight hours a day, and if you don’t like it, well nobody said a job was fun. It is possible to make a good living from blogging, even if you’re only monetizing with Adsense, so long as you know what you’re doing, and put in some serious hours.
In my opinion, you’re much better off trying to sign people up to an email list, or sell them a product through Pay Pal, or sell them an affiliate product. There are much better possibilities for monetizing a site than just Adsense, but I put it on my site because it does generate some income.
