Making a Hosted WordPress Site

It is a lot easier than most people think to buy a domain name and hosting, and set up your own proper website.

When I first started out online, I wrote articles on sites owned by other people, and the problem with this, is you don’t really have any control over what they do with your stuff.

They may have clauses written into the fine print of the terms and conditions, which say that they own the right to use all of your material, even if they suspend your account, and aren’t paying you anymore.

For example, Blogger is a huge site, owned by Google, but you can have your Blogger account suspended at any time, for any reason, and lose all of the hard work you’ve done.

The best way in my opinion to do anything online is to get hosting from a reputable place like Host Gator, (where you can also buy a domain name), and install WordPress on your own domain, which is yours, no matter what happens.

Installing WordPress on Your Domain

If you did what I just suggested, you can quite easily get in touch with the 24 hour chat support team at Host Gator to tell you exactly how to install WordPress on your domain, it’s pretty simple to set it up via their control panel, through an FTP client like Fantastico.

Otherwise, you may want to download and install the WordPress software on the root directory of your site, or in a folder you create on your server, using an FTP client software like Filezilla.

To be honest, I was just happy to have someone talk me through it all, and I’m going to leave all of that hard stuff until a bit later.

I think that if you’re a beginner, just go through Host Gator, talk to them, and get your WordPress admin panel, and then you’re ready to go.

It’s very easy to make a hosted WordPress site, and if you want to learn more about the specific things you should do once you have your WordPress site, (like installing the all in one SEO plug-in), then sign up to the newsletter, and I’ll teach you everything I’ve learned about making a successful hosted website on WordPress.

It's quite easy to make a good hosted website on WordPress, so long as you follow the advice I offer.

Professional Tips on Using WordPress

This post is called professional tips on using WordPress, but it is actually a short excerpt from my e-book, which you can get for free by signing up to the newsletter in the sidebar.

Look in plugins, and get the All in one SEO pack. Go into the settings, and add your
home page title and description, and change the first three permalink settings to
/%postname%/ only.

Then go into the settings- permalink part, and add a custom permalink:
/%postname%/.

For more detail on this, and videos of the process, you can check out where I saw it
on 1 Hour Jobs.

This is about all you have to do to have good SEO on your URLs, although there is
some debate that it’s better to have the category name as well as the postname, and
that would look like /%category%/%postname%/ or something like that.

I’m not an expert in those things, so I’d listen to the guy in 1 hour jobs. Now, you just
need to find a good WordPress template.

There are many sites like Template Monster, and dozens of website designers who
can build you a custom theme, but I’ve heard you can just use the default twenty
eleven theme, and it gives you options to add your own photos, or customise the
design in many ways.

You can always use Thesis, like that guy suggested, which has a lot of customisable
options to make many different sites. I like Canvas if you’re going to buy one.
So you have a good theme, you have good URLs, you might want to set a page
instead of a post as the home page on your site.
To do that, go to settings-reading, after making a page that will be your new home
page, and a page to move your blog page to.

You can use Filezilla, or a similar FTP client to upload html files directly to the net,
which means you can make pages on your computer, like I use Open Office
sometimes. Here’s a You Tube video of how that works: How to Publish Using
Filezilla
.

It is possible to “rip” other templates, and edit them in an html or text editor, and then
upload them directly to your server using these methods, but that is also illegal, and
don’t ask me how it works. It might be alright for very simple pages.

Figuring out what the demographic is of your friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter is the most important step in working out how you should market to them.
